‘Spaceballs’ at 30: Bill Pullman Says Crew Worried Blue Screen Would Make Them Go Blind

MGM/Photofest

Of all the fond memories Bill Pullman has of working on Spaceballs, explaining how the crew feared that working with a special effects blue screen could make them pass out or go blind is the tale which makes him laugh the hardest recounting.

Now a household name, the then 32-year-old actor was an unknown with only one film credit under his belt (Ruthless People) when Mel Brooks discovered him in a play called Barabbas at the Los Angeles Theatre Center. It was at that point — after Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks both turned down the lead role in his sci-fi parody — the iconic writer/director offered Pullman the part of Lone Starr.

As the beloved Star Wars spoof turns 30 (June 24), Pullman granted The Hollywood Reporter an in-depth interview to discuss his zany adventure of working with Brooks, the late John Candy’s frustrations with his costume and how Pullman’s makeup artist scolded him for not acting like a star, among other cherished memories.

At age 91, Mel Brooks will play Vegas for the first time.

(Jay L. Clendenin / Los Angeles Times)

When he arrives in Las Vegas at the end of June, Mel Brooks will have just blown out 91 candles on his birthday cake.

Brooks’ first Las Vegas appearance comes in the form of a one-man show called “An Evening With Mel Brooks,” which gives a behind-the-scenes look at his long, Hollywood-centric life.

During his career, the actor, director and film producer has won four Emmys, three Grammys, one Oscar and three Tonys. He said it was hotel mogul Steve Wynn who asked him to perform in Sin City.

At 90 years old, the prince of parody has been awarded four Emmys, three Grammys, one Oscar, and three Tonys (and, as the self-described “EGOTAK” is quick to point out, awards from the American Film Institute and the Kennedy Center). In the new HBO documentary If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast, he joins other notable nonagenarians in singing the praises of advanced age with host Carl Reiner. Here, The Producers producer (and writer-director) submits to some appropriately absurd questions from the writings of Warhol.

Mel shares stories about his life, career and the making of ‘Blazing Saddles’

mel - reading

Everything was in place for a conventional interview during Mel Brooks’ appearance Saturday night in Reading. Two comfortable chairs were on the stage, one for the filmmaker and the other for a moderator. It isn’t clear why they bothered.

The remarkable 90-year-old Brooks talked so much the moderator barely got a word in edgewise, and the comic legend rarely stayed in his seat as he told anecdotes about his life, career and the making of “Blazing Saddles,” which was screened before his talk. The 1974 hit dominated much of the conversation. Brooks pronounced it his best film and perhaps the funniest movie ever made.

Mel Brooks made it clear that he was not paid to appear at the premiere of the new HBO documentary “If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast.”

“They never pay, they never pay,” he joked. “How funny I was tonight and I don’t get a penny.”

Brooks stole the show from fellow Hollywood legends Carl Reiner, Dick Van Dyke and Norman Lear, with whom he shared the stage after the screening Wednesday. The four longtime friends star in the film, which explores what makes for a vibrant, active life after age 90. Non-famous nonagenarians and centenarians are also featured, including a 101-year-old competitive runner, a 100-year-old pianist and a 98-year-old yoga teacher.
