Never having seen the 1974 film Young Frankenstein, starring Gene Wilder, I didn’t know quite what to expect from its stage adaptation which is currently enjoying a UK premiere at Newcastle Theatre Royal . But knowing the zany reputation of the legendary Brooks, who wrote and directed it, I thought I had a pretty good idea. Even so, it’s not easy to review a show which is such a fast and furious madcap mix of ingredients. Suffice to say that from the flash of lightning that marks its start to the cracking ensemble finale, this musical-comedy take on the classic horror story is monstrously good.
